LES CINQ APPROCHES DEFINITIONNELLES DES MEDIAS ALTERNATIFS : PROPOSITION D’UN CADRE CRITERIEL A TROIS CRITERES

Il y a une forme de nébuleuse autour de ce concept « média alternatif » ; le définir demanderait d’intégrer plusieurs considérations et variables. Il nous serait imposé de répondre à un certain nombre de questions sur les médias. Ainsi, cet article n’a pas et ne peut avoir la prétention de définir ce concept dans son entièreté, mais tente d’en donner une définition opérationnelle. La recherche fait d’abord une recension de cinq approches définitionnelles mobilisés dans la littérature académique : l’approche des définitions de médias alternatifs comme des reflets inversés de médias conventionnels, l’approche des définitions typologiques, l’approche des définitions généalogiques, l’approche des définitions systémiques, l’approche des définitions par critères. Ensuite, se concentrant sur l’approche des définitions par critères, elle réduit à trois critères le nombre de critères (parmi les huit recensés) retenus pour définir un média alternatif. Enfin, elle propose une définition autour de ce cadre critériel proposé, avant d’ouvrir de nouveaux angles de recherche, notamment l’angle numérique, étant donné que l’étude se contente ici de produire une synthèse théorique.

Abstract

There is a certain nebulousness surrounding the concept of ‘alternative media’ ; defining it would require integrating several considerations and variables. It would impose answering a significant number of questions about media. Thus, this article cannot and does not claim to fully define this concept, but attempts to provide an operational definition. The research first reviews five definitional approaches found in academic literature : the approach of alternative media defined as inverse reflections of mainstream media, the typological definitions approach, the genealogical definitions approach, the systemic definitions approach, and the criteria-based definitions approach. Then, focusing on the crieria-based definitions approach, it reduces to three the number of criteria (among the eight reviewed) retained for defining alternative media. Finally, it proposes a definition based on this criterial framework, before opening up new research perspectives, including the digital angle, as this study is limited to a theoretical synthesis.
