Abstract

Abstract

International academic mobility is most often studied through individual trajectories and the effects of mobility experiences on participants. This perspective tends to overlook another dimension : the interorganizational relationships that make such mobility possible. This article examines the role of an intermediary organization in structuring these relationships, drawing on the case of Défap (Service protestant de mission). It addresses the following research question : how does Défap perform an interorganizational intermediation function in organizing academic mobility between partner institutions ?

The study adopts a qualitative approach based on a single-case study. The empirical material comprises sixteen semi-structured interviews conducted with academic mobility participants and institutional actors involved in the relationships between Défap and its partner organizations. The data were analyzed thematically to identify the functions performed by the intermediary organization in establishing connections, coordinating activities, and maintaining interorganizational relationships. The analysis draws on Boundary Spanning Theory.

The findings indicate that Défap does more than administratively manage academic mobility. It contributes to building and sustaining relationships between partner organizations, coordinates their financial, administrative, and academic contributions, and maintains these relationships beyond the mobility period. This intermediary function is nevertheless constrained by available resources and by the unequal capacities of partner organizations. The article argues that interorganizational intermediation can be understood as an organizationalized form of boundary spanning, whereby an intermediary actor builds, coordinates, and maintains an interface between autonomous organizations.

From this perspective, academic mobility is not merely the movement of individuals but a relational process whose effectiveness depends on the quality of interorganizational coordination. The analysis thus shifts attention from individual trajectories alone toward the organizational conditions underlying international and partnership-based academic mobility.
