Institutional reforms are supposed to increase the probability of adoption and intensification of cotton cultivation in Burkina Faso. In this work, we wanted to test this through the analysis of the different institutional reforms adopted in Burkina on the probability of adoption and intensification of cotton cultivation. The secondary data that were estimated come from the Permanent Agricultural Survey (1994 and 2017). The results of the econometric estimations of the Tobit model indicate that the probabilities of cotton adoption and intensification are determined by institutional and socio-economic variables. The adoption rate of cotton cultivation is estimated to average 70%. The difference-in-means test of the predicted probabilities of adoption and intensification shows that, on average, institutional reforms contribute to increasing the probability of adoption and intensification by 28.99%.
