This article explores the role and potential of cooperatives as an alternative means of social and economic development in Morocco, using a methodological approach based on a case study of a group of cooperatives called Dar Azaafarane. The surveyed sample consists of the members of this cooperative and their families, who have benefited from the jobs, income, training, and social services provided by Dar Azaafarane. The article examines how Dar Azaafarane contributes to local development in rural areas by providing jobs, income, training, and social services to its members and their families. It also analyzes the challenges and opportunities that cooperatives face in Morocco, such as legal, institutional, and socio-economic constraints, as well as the need for increased support and recognition from the government and other stakeholders. The main conclusion of the article is that cooperatives can be a viable alternative to dominant development models based on state intervention or market liberalization, as they promote economic dynamism, social inclusion, and cultural diversity. Therefore, the article emphasizes the need for increased support from the government and other stakeholders to enable cooperatives to develop and contribute more to local development in rural areas.
